Now that the CyberSynth software and hardware systems are installed and configured, you can finally listen to some sounds. This document explains how to select and audition sounds using the CyberSynth control panel, and how to play demonstration music files using CyberPlayer.
Using On-Screen Balloon Help
Descriptive text for all parts of CyberSynth and CyberPlayer is always available by activating the Balloon Help feature. Receive useful information by moving the mouse cursor over objects on the screen. An easy way to toggle balloon help on and off is available in every window. Just click once on the ﾒquestion markﾓ button in the window. This is the same as selecting Show Balloons from Appleﾕs System 7 question mark menu. When you are finished using Balloon Help, click the question mark button again to disable it. Remember, on-screen balloon help is always just one click away!
CyberSynth Quick Tour
The CyberSynth control panel enables you to audition sounds with the mouse or from the QWERTY keyboard. This is done from the CyberSynthﾕs Play window. All installed sounds can be selected and heard from within this window. This feature lets you hear CyberSynth without an external MIDI controller.
To audition installed sounds:
1. Open the CyberSynth control panel.
Select the Control Panels folder from the Apple Menu, then double-click the CyberSynth control panel icon. Alternatively, if you are using System 7.5 or later, launch CyberSynth by choosing CyberSynth from the Control Panels hierarchical menu.
2. Click the Play button.
The Play window is displayed.
3. Play some notes.
Click the on-screen ﾒivoriesﾓ with the mouse to play notes. Or, press keys on the QWERTY (computer) keyboard. The QWERTY keyboard diagram on the screen shows which notes are available to play. You can play up to four notes simultaneously (depending on your Macintosh model).
4. Change the sound.
By using the pull-down menus with the mouse, you can change banks and programs. A bank is a collection of related programs. A program is a specific sound within a bank. For information regarding installed banks and how to access more programs, refer to the "How to Install" document.
5. Click OK when finished, then close the control panel window.
Playing a few notes of one program is useful for auditioning sounds but hardly qualifies as a musical performance. Now youﾕll learn how to play back complete musical arrangements.
Playing Music With CyberPlayer
Playback of standard MIDI files is easy with CyberPlayer. Just open the file and press play!
To play MIDI sequence files:
1. Open the Sequences folder.
The Sequences folder is inside the CyberPlayer folder. You selected the CyberPlayer folder destination when you installed the software.
2. Double-click the file named "Dance.GM"
This launches the CyberPlayer application and opens the sequence file.
3. Click the Play button.
The Play button is shaped like a right-pointing triangle. Adjust the volume of your speaker system as desired.
4. Click the Stop button to end playback.
The Stop button is shaped like a square. Playback will stop by itself at the end of the tune.
5. Close the Dance.GM file by clicking the close box in the sequence window title bar or choose Close from the File menu.
6. Open and play more sequence files as desired.
Repeat steps 2 through 5 until youﾕve had enough gratification.
7. Choose Quit from the File menu when finished.
This closes the CyberPlayer application.
